This specimen was lot 23447 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Bronze 2 Sols, 1792. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Token coinage with a depiction of Seated Liberty. A boldly struck and highly lustrous coin with nearly complete mint red."
The second specimen was lot 41133 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE. Constitution Period. 2 Sols, 1792. Birmingham (Soho) Mint. NGC MS-64 Red Brown."
The third specimen was lot 43161 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[3] noted,
"FRANCE. Constitution. Bronze 2 Sols Token Essai (Pattern), Year IV/1792. Birmingham (Soho) Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65. Maz-157/9 (C). Variety with (PATENTÉ). Lettered edge. By M. Boulton & N.-A. Ponthon for the Monneron Brothers. An exceptional example, this specimen striking exhibits a sharp strike, rich brown surfaces, and enchanting eye appeal radiating throughout. Mazard is somewhat confusing, as Maz-157 and Maz-159 would appear to point to the same type. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Phil Keller on 22 March 1995)."
The fourth specimen was lot 43162 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[3] noted,
"FRANCE. Constitution. Gilt Bronze 2 Sols Token Essai (Pattern), Year IV/1792. Birmingham (Soho) Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62. Maz-157/9 var. (bronze). Variety with (PATENTÉ). Lettered edge. By M. Boulton & N.-A. Ponthon for the Monneron Brothers. Extremely attractive and an EXCEPTIONALLY RARE type, this pattern issue glistens with an abundance of lustrous brilliance across its inviting gilt surfaces. Mazard is somewhat confusing, as Maz-157 and Maz-159 would appear to point to the same type, though neither are gilt, as is the case here. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Grabow on 5 April 1962). Ex: Ludwig Grabow FPL 44 (Spring 1962) Lot # 435."
The fifth specimen was lot 43163 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[3] noted,
"FRANCE. Constitution. Silver 2 Sols Token Essai (Pattern), Year IV/1792. Birmingham (Soho) Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-61. Variety with (PATENTÉ). Lettered edge. By M. Boulton & N.-A. Ponthon for the Monneron Brothers. An EXTREMELY RARE off-metal striking in silver, this pattern issue presents deep gray toning and only lightly scattered marks. About it, Margolis notes that '...I have suggested that this silver example may have been struck in 1823, when a few were supplied to S. S. Edkins.' From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from the Bourgeys on 31 May 1989). Ex: Émile and Sabine Bourgey (4/1989) Lot # 134."
This specimen is a bronze two sols token issued for the merchants Monneron Freres in Paris, France, in 1792, the year of the Terror. These and the accompanying one and five sou tokens were made at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, England, whose steam presses were the only ones capable of striking such large copper coins. It is also believed that the Soho mint restruck these long after the Revolution was over for sale as souvenirs. It is not known if this specimen is from 1792 or later. A few exist in silver; these are likely restrikes.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper or bronze, the third and fourth specimens 16.89 g, the fifth specimen is 19.33 g.
Catalog reference: KM-Tn25 (bronze) or KM Tn25a (silver); Maz-157 or Maz-159. The fifth specimen is Maz-158.
