Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1411

This specimen was lot 1411 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €45 (about US$60 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), 2 sols, 1792BB, an 4, Strasbourg. Type FRANCAIS. D/ B. dr. à g. R/ Faisceau dans une couronne de chêne. presque Très Beau. (France, constitutional period, 1791-92, double sol of 1792, Strasbourg mint, Type FRANCAIS. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: fasces in an oak wreath. about Very Fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck 1791-93 during the early stages of the French Revolution before the trial and execution of the king. Unlike all the other mints, at Strasbourg the king's title was spelled "ROI DES FRANÇAIS" instead of "ROI DES FRANÇOIS". Enormous quantities were produced at several temporary mints from any metal available. This and other base metal issues of the 1790's went into circulation and were not demonetized until the 1840's.

Recorded mintage: est. 12,000,000 for 1792-93.

Specification: 24.47 g, 32-35 mm diameter, plain edge, bronze or metal du cloche; this specimen 23,28 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl. 1722; Gad-24.
