Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41331
SB0123-41331r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41331 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 24 Mariengroschen, 1694. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Ernst August. PCGS MS-62. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type, struck 1693-98, was worth two-thirds thaler or one gulden. It is fairly common in circulated condition but expensive choice. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-378; Welter-1982.
