Mexico 1834-Do RM 2 reales

from the Mountain Groan Collection

another specimen

Shown is an 1834DoRM two reales, one of a type struck at the Durango mint 1826, 1832-35 and 1841-61. Assayer RM (Ramon Mascarenas) is recorded for the years 1830-48. The Durango two reales is considerably scarcer than the catalog indicates but makes up for it with a fascinating local design, the large eagle is distinctive to this mint. This specimen is definitely an overdate but it is uncertain whether 1834/2 or 1834/3 (both are listed in the SCWC) or something else entirely, perhaps even the rare 1835/4 RM/RL.

Many consider the Durango mintmark to be common on pre-decimal issues but that is only true of the eight reales and half escudos. The half, one and two reales are scarce to rare and no four reales are known to exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 374.4.
