The first specimen was lot 4153 in Sincona sale 67 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"[[Iran|IRAN]] | Qajar Dynasty | Nâsir al-dîn Shâh, 1264-1313 H./1848-1896 AD, Machine struck coinage, always with the mint name Tihrân, gold coins and patterns for gold coins. Toman 1311 H. Late facing bust obv., rev. long titulature including saheb qirân. Trace of mount, extremely fine."</blockquote> The second specimen was lot 405 in Goldberg sale 136 (Los Angeles, September 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[2] noted, "Iran. Toman, AH1311 (1893/1894). Nasir al-Din Shah, 1848-1896. Bust of Shah. Reverse: Second inscription within wreathed border. PCGS graded MS-62." The third specimen was lot 1027 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted, <blockquote>"IRAN, Nasir al-Din Shah, 1264-1313 AH (1848-1896). 1 Toman 1311 AH (1894 AD), Tehran Mint. Bust type. Shaheb-Gharan. NGC UNC Details. Obverse slightly cleaned. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 29."</blockquote> This type was struck AH 1311 only during the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah, who was assassinated while preparing to celebrate the 50th year of his rule. Tomans exist for AH 1311 without the obverse legend (KM 933) and with the lion on the obverse (KM 989). We used the KM number in the title as Friedberg does not distinguish between tomans with or without the obverse legend. One toman was ten krans or ten thousand dinars.

Sincona sale 85, lot 1027

The first specimen was lot 4153 in Sincona sale 67 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN | Qajar Dynasty | Nâsir al-dîn Shâh, 1264-1313 H./1848-1896 AD, Machine struck coinage, always with the mint name Tihrân, gold coins and patterns for gold coins. Toman 1311 H. Late facing bust obv., rev. long titulature including saheb qirân. Trace of mount, extremely fine."

The second specimen was lot 405 in Goldberg sale 136 (Los Angeles, September 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[3] noted,

"IRAN, Nasir al-Din Shah, 1264-1313 AH (1848-1896). 1 Toman 1311 AH (1894 AD), Tehran Mint. Bust type. Shaheb-Gharan. NGC UNC Details. Obverse slightly cleaned. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 29."

This type was struck AH 1311 only during the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah, who was assassinated while preparing to celebrate the 50th year of his rule. Tomans exist for AH 1311 with a closed wreath on the reverse (KM 933) and with the lion on the obverse (KM 989). We used the KM number in the title as Friedberg does not distinguish between tomans with or without the obverse legend. One toman was ten krans or ten thousand dinars.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.87 g, 0.900 fine gold, the first specimen 2.80 g, the third specimen 2.86 g.

Catalog reference: KM 937.
