Sincona sale 85, lot 1009

The first specimen was lot 4156 in Sincona sale 67 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 22,000 CHF (about US$28,963 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN | Qajar Dynasty | Nâsir al-dîn Shâh, 1264-1313 H./1848-1896 AD, Machine struck coinage, always with the mint name Tihrân, gold coins and patterns for gold coins. 10 Toman 1311 H. Facing bust, rev. extended titulature as-sultân / al-a'zam wa l-khâqân al-a / fham nâsir ad-dîn shâh qâjâr in a circle of crosses, Removed mount, edge flaws. Good very fine."

The second specimen was lot 1009 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 85,000 CHF (about US$114,461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"IRAN, Nasir al-Din Shah, 1264-1313 AH (1848-1896). 10 Tomans 1311 AH (1893 AD), Tehran Mint. Bust type. Extremely rare, especially in this quality. Less than five pieces known. NGC MS61+. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 52. From the Leeds collection, auction Baldwin's Dubai, March 2000, lot 567. Finest certified by NGC. The obverse bust on this coin is the same as for the 1 Toman Saheb-Gharan issue of 1311 AH."

This one year type is rare along with the rest of the issues of this denomination. Ten toman was one hundred krans or one hundred thousand dinars.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.74 g, 0.900 fine gold, the first specimen 28.45 g, the second specimen 28.73 g..
