Steve Album sale 51, lot 720
Bengal in 1942, from Hammond's atlas

This specimen was lot 720 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AV mohur, Murshidabad, AH1200 (1785/86) year 19, East India Company issue in the name of Shah Alam II; struck mainly at Calcutta but also at Murshidabad without a distinguishing symbol; wonderful bold strike! NGC graded AU58." This type originally struck years 10-19, then the date was frozen at year 19 and struck for many years thereafter. While the Mughal Empire lasted, the British in Bengal were careful to strike coinage in the emperor's name. The inscriptions are in Arabic. The date should read "۱۹".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 12.36 g, gold, this specimen 12.26 g.

Catalog reference: Stv-2.30, Prid-36, Fr-1528, KM-94.
