Bengal in 1942, from Hammond's atlas

This specimen was lot 42386 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Bengal Presidency. Rupee, "AH 1202 Year 19" (1792). Calcutta (as "Murshidabad") Mint. in the name of Shah Alam II. PCGS PROOF-58. First milled issue, with wide border. A marvelous specimen with a bold strike and some charming blue toning throughout. Much die rust is seen, highlighting a likely later date of production than most of the type. While PCGS has designated this example as a Proof; Stevens suggests that proofs of this type may just be strongly struck business strikes. Whatever the case, this example of Calcutta's first milled coinage is most pleasing and deserved of many bids." These quarter rupees, half rupees and rupees were struck 1793-1818 at Calcutta and Murshidabad in the name of the Mogul emperor Shah Alam II.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.59 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-106; Prid-153; Stevens-4.10.
