Bengal in 1942, from Hammond's atlas

This specimen was lot 723 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AV 1/2 mohur, Murshidabad, AH1202 year 19, East India Company issue in the name of Shah Alam II struck in Calcutta in 1793-1818 with frozen regnal year and mint, with oblique edge milling, a wonderful lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS64." This type has the date frozen at year 1202/19 and struck for many years thereafter. While the Mughal Empire lasted, the British in Bengal were careful to strike coinage in the emperor's name. The inscriptions are in Arabic. The date should read "۱۹".
