This specimen was lot 1238 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted,
"MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1833 Go MJ. Guanajuato. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A handsome example of this scarce date that boasts traces of lustre and a few scratches in the fields, a bold strike throughout, and clean surfaces. Minor patches of toning are seen around the rim, and this one has a good overall appearance. One tiny edge nick above the M of MEXICANA is noted. Richard A. Long in his reference notes that no example of this date has crossed the auction block in a grade finer than EF. Here is an opportunity to secure a rare example on a solid planchet with a strong strike and good eye appeal. Struck medal turn. Choice Extremely Fine."
The Guanajuato mint struck eight escudos 1828-70 and is one of the abundant mints for that denomination; most dates are common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
