This specimen is a fairly common date of a series struck 1874-93 at the Alamos mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 8915 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $905. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Alamos. 10 Centavos, 1879-AsL. Toned. NGC MS-63."

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 403.
