This specimen was lot 868 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 2,025 CHF (about US$2,537 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Frankreich, Convention, 1793-1795. Ecu de 6 livres 1793 / AN II BB, Strasbourg. Äusserst selten. Fast sehr schön. Justiert.'' (kingdom of [[France]], Convention, écu of six livres of the year 2, Strasbourg mint. Extremely rare, About very fine, Adjustment marks.)"</blockquote> When this coin was struck at Strasbourg, the ancien régime had disappeared with the trial and execution of the king, who had appeared on the previous type ([[France 1793-D ecu|KM 615]]). In 1793, as invading armies approached from all directions, the Committee of Public Safety would initiate the Terror. In 1795, following the introduction of the metric system, the first five francs would be issued. Strasbourg issued this type with obverse legend "FRANÇOISE" (Gad-58, scarce) and "FRANÇAISE" (Gad-59, rare, shown here).

This specimen was lot 72371 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 15 Sols, 1792-W. Lille Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. 2nd semester, with dot. The only [one] of the type in the PCGS census, this lustrous, near choice example emanates from the troubled revolutionary period just before the king was executed." This type was struck 1791-93 at numerous mints but only Paris ("A") and Limoges ("I") are common. Its face value was one-eighth of an écu.
