Mexico 1838Do 8 escudos rev Stacks 110-1218.jpg

This specimen was lot 1218 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,610. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1838/6 Do RM. Durango. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A pleasing example of this extremely rare date despite a couple of trivial pin scratches that blend into the devices. Yellow-gold with a tinge of orange. The 8 is clearly over a 6 in the date, and the rims are clean. This particular coin lacks planchet flaws and the strike is reasonably sharp. About Uncirculated." The Durango mint struck eight escudos 1832-70 and is one of the abundant mints tho less so than Culiacan or Guanajuato; most dates are common. The eagle is distinctive to Durango and can be found on all the silver and gold denominations.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 383.3, Fr.68.
