Heritage 3024, lot 28136

This specimen was lot 28136 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $397.15. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic Peso 1870 Oa-E Small A, AU, untoned with soft highpoint wear and moderate field contact, close observation reveals the 7 in the date widely repunched south." Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. This issue from Oaxaca is scarce. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Durango (scarce), Mexico City (common), San Luis Potosi (scarce), Chihuahua (common), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Guadalajara (scarce).

Recorded mintage: 1,967,000 (including assayers S, G and O).
