Aureo sale 238, lot 536

This specimen was lot 536 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 140 euro (about US$222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1820. Sevilla. CJ. 8 reales. Parte de brillo original. Bella. Muy escasa así. EBC. (Eight reales of 1820, Seville mint. Some luster, handsome, very scarce thus, extremely fine.)"

By 1816, Napoleon was defeated and exiled to St. Helena to fabricate his legend. Ferdinand was reinstalled in Madrid as king of Spain and began taking condign revenge on his opponents, real and imagined. Rebellion and anarchy surged the length of Latin America. This standard bust of Ferdinand was used at Seville 1809-20.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16028, Cal. 644, KM 466.4, Dav-323.
