This silver 960 réis was minted at the Bahia mint 1818-22. These coins were usually struck over Spanish-American dollars but many other undertypes are known. Large quantities were produced, making this and the similar Rio mint issue the commonest Brazilian silver coin of the colonial period. The specimen shown was struck over a Mexico City 1818 8 reales.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 26.89 g, 0.896 fine silver, 0.775 troy oz ASW.
