Ponterio sale 159, lot 8939

This specimen is a somewhat scarce date of a series struck 1869-97 at the Guanajuato mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 8939 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guanajuato. 10 Centavos, 1874-GoS. RARE date and far superior in condition to what is normally seen. Planchet flaw on the reverse, nice strike. EXTREMELY FINE."

Specification: 2.71 g, .903 fine silver, .078 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 403.5.
