Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74708

This specimen was lot 74708 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hamburg. 3 Mark, 1914-J. Hamburg Mint. PCGS PROOF-65 Cameo. A delightful Cameo Proof coin with enthralling cobalt and champagne toning on the obverse. The reverse is blast white color." This type is common and was struck 1908-1914; only the proofs are scarce. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Recorded mintage: 575,111 plus proofs.

Specification: 16.66 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge, 33 mm diameter.
