Germany 1914-G mark
This specimen was lot 72453 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. Mark, 1914-G. Karlsruhe Mint. NGC MS-68. Tied with a handful of others for the finest in the NGC census, this blazing Gem offers flawless surfaces that are incredibly radiant and lustrous. Just a hint of burnt sienna toning is observed at the bottom of each side, though it otherwise remains entirely argent." This coin is a silver one mark from a type issued 1891-1916 from six mints, including the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. The pre-war silver marks are not rare but the 1914-16 issues were almost completely hoarded, making them common today in all grades. This one is common.
Recorded mintage: 1,911,000.
Specification: 5.55 g, 0.900 fine silver, 24 mm diameter.
