Germany 1914-E pfennig
This specimen was lot 72461 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. Pfennig, 1914-E. Muldenhutten Mint. NGC PROOF-64 Red. A stunning near-Gem, this fully red specimen offers intense brilliance and radiant charm, and is easy to see why it stands at the top of the NGC census." Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This denomination was converted to aluminum in 1917.
