Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1038

This specimen was lot 1038 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €440 (about US$549 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AV 40 francs, 1813 A, Paris. Traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14), gold forty francs of 1813, Paris mint. Adjustment marks, very fine.)"

A complete set of this type, struck 1809-13, comprises 12 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. This coin is an issue of the Paris mint. The type coin, the 1811-A, is the most numerous forty francs of the entire series (1.26 million minted).

Recorded mintage: 44,829[2], a common date.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
