Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1066

This specimen was lot 1066 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$873 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AV 40 francs, 1816 W, Lille. 3.210 p. frappées. Rare. Très Beau/Superbe. (France, Louis XVIII, second restoration (1815-24), gold forty francs of 1816, Lille mint, 3,210 pieces struck, rare, very fine/extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1816-24 and most of the fourteen known dates are rare. This is a product of the Lille mint. The common dates was 1816-A, 1817-A and 1818-W.

Recorded mintage: 3,186[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Auguste François Michaut.
