Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1815
JE160-1815r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1815 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$823 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AV 20 francs, 1816 W, Lille. 4295 p. frappées. Rare. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, second restoration, 1815-24, gold twenty francs of 1816, Lille mint, 4,295 pieces struck. Rare, about very fine.)"

Gold coins of the French branch mints are very scarce as a class and have long been underpriced, mostly because the few survivors are in poor condition. This is the second twenty francs for Louis XVIII, issued for his second restoration. The type is common but this is a very scarce date.

Recorded mintage: 4,265[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Auguste-François Michaut.

Catalog reference: F.519/4, KM 712.9, Gad-1028; Fr-539.
