Künker sale 264, lot 3113

This specimen was lot 3113 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,134 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XVIII, 1814, 1815-1824. 40 Francs 1816, B, Rouen. 11,61 g Feingold. GOLD. RR Nur 767 Exemplare geprägt. Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, 1814-24, forty francs of 1816, Rouen mint. Rare, 767 pieces struck, choice extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1816-24 and most of the fourteen known dates are rare. This is a product of the Rouen mint and is rare.

Recorded mintage: 755 but probably higher[2].

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Auguste-François Michaut.
