The first specimen was lot 23787 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVIII gold 40 Francs 1816-Q, AU53 PCGS, a nice original example with soft toning, one contact mark below the bust. A scarcer mint, with only the one year issue." This type was struck in France 1816-24 and most of the fourteen known dates are rare. This is a product of the Perpignan mint. This one is scarce, priced about 50% more than the common dates 1816-A, 1817-A and 1818-W, but not a key.
