This specimen was lot 1353 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 750 (about US$1,172 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AV 40 francs, 1819 W, Lille. 4.610 p. frappées. Rare. Très Beau. (France, Louis XVIII, second restoration, 1815-24, gold forty francs of 1819, Lille mint, rare, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1816-24 and most of the fourteen known dates are rare. This one is very scarce but not a key.

Recorded mintage: 4,598.

Specification: 26 mm diameter, 12.90 grams, 0.900 fine gold, .373 troy oz AGW.
