This specimen was lot 30500 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVIII gold 40 Francs 1822-H XF40 NGC, La Rochelle mint. Incredibly scarce one-year type from the La Rochelle mint with a low mintage of only 611 pieces. Lightly toned golden surfaces with typical flatness on the King's hair and reverse adjustment marks. A highly collectible piece, perfect for the collector of this series." This type was struck 1816-24 and most of the fourteen known dates are rare. This one is rare but not the key.

Recorded mintage: 605 but probably higher[2].

Specification: 26 mm diameter, 12.90 grams, 0.900 fine gold, .373 troy oz AGW.
