France 1822-A 40 francs
This specimen was lot 1431 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$21,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE | Kingdom | misc. Louis XVIII. 1814-1824. 40 Francs 1822 A, Paris. Von grosser Seltenheit. Nur 373 Exemplare geprägt. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, 1814-24, forty francs of 1822, Paris mint. Extremely rare. Only 373 pieces struck. PCGS AU50.)"
This type was struck 1816-24 and most of the fourteen known dates are rare, including this one.
Recorded mintage: 367, three known[2].
