Zeeland 1692 2 daalder Dav-4973
The first specimen was lot 1513 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €90 (about US$112 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, ZEELAND, Provincie, AR dubbele daalder van 10 schelling, 1692, Droit: Staande ridder met zwaard en voor zich gekroond provinciewapen. Revers: De wapens van de zes steden van Zeeland rondom het wapen van de Eerste Edele. Zwak geslagen. Kleine defekten in de muntplaat. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, silver double daalder of ten shillings of 1692. Obverse: standing knight with sword supports the crowned provincial arms; reverse: the arms of the cities of Zeeland surround the arms of the Stadtholder. Weakly struck, small planchet defect, fine to very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 74171 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[2] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Zeeland. 2 Daalders of 10 Escalins (10 Schelling - 60 Stuivers), 1692. NGC EF-45. A pleasing example of the type, this piece displays deep cabinet toning and a good, though not entirely full, strike. Wear is limited and not distracting." This obscure denomination was not struck in all the provinces. In addition to Zeeland, we find it listed for Nijmegen, Holland (Dav-4830) and Deventer (Dav-4978). Other provinces issued three gulden (such as Dav-4963) of nearly identical weight.
Reported Mintage: 57,990 for 1690-93.
Specification: 31.76 g, 0.906 fine silver, the first specimen 31,18 g.
