Zeeland 1687 4 daalder Dav-A4973
The first specimen was lot 30171 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $22,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Zeeland. Provincial Double 10 Escalins (4 Taler) 1687 MS64 NGC, Middelburg mint. An extremely rare piefort striking of the standard 10 Escalins design, featuring deeply impressed designs that lend further weight to its already commendable size. Bathed in a soft patina that serves to lighten the surfaces, this is presently the finest of just 3 examples certified, with its distinguished pedigree sure to elicit even fiercer competition from collectors. Ex. Millennia Collection (Goldberg Auction 46B, May 2008, Lot 779); Irving Goodman Collection (Goldberg Auction 15, June 2002, Lot 893). From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." The second specimen was lot 4783 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,724 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NIEDERLANDE, ZEELAND, Provinz. Doppeltaler zu 10 Schilling 1687. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, double daalder of 10 schilling of 1687. Very scarce in this quality, fine patina, extremely fine.)"
The third specimen was lot 43271 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[3] noted, "Extraordinary Piefort 10 Escalins, NETHERLANDS. Zeeland. 2 Daalders of 10 Escalins (10 Schelling - 60 Stuivers) Piefort, 1687. Middelburg Mint. NGC MS-63. Variety with the denominations "10 - SC" flanking circle of shields. A lovely Choice Mint example, with lovely luster and rich pastel toning. The details on this example are bold, and the fields are largely clean and free of contact. A seldom encountered type is here elevated to an elite level of RARITY in this state of preservation." This is a piedfort version of the regular sixty stuivers (Dav-4973) struck 1685-93. Piedforts are also listed for 1688 and 1690, all rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 31.76 g, 0.906 fine silver, the first specimen 63.4 g, the second specimen 63.23 g.
