Zeeland 1686 silver ducat Dav-4914
This specimen was lot 32277 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $168,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Off-Metal Gold Dutch Rarity. Zeeland. Provincial gold Proof Pattern Rijksdaalder 1686 PR62 NGC. Struck to a 10 Ducat weight. Yet another impeccable rarity from the greater Dutch series and one seemingly scarcer than the previous lot. Originally an unlisted date in Delmonte and completely absent from auction records in recent decades, we expect the current offering to be of the utmost importance to collectors. Hardly a trace of weakness is detected through the raised features, displaying only the clearest and most well-expressed detail to the coin's entirety. Scintillating in overall appearance while aurous flash emanates across the whole of the coin, allowing this piece to doubtlessly inspire bidder confidence when brought to market. From the Coenen Collection." The silver prinsen rijksdaalder was struck 1606-51 with mintmark and 1652-71 without. Gold prinsen rijksdaalders are listed for 1682, 1684 and 1686, long after the denomination had been retired. The specimen shown here, however, is a silver ducat (KM 52.1) struck in gold, similar to KM Pn11. Silver ducats were struck in Zeeland starting in 1659 and run well into the eighteenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
