Sincona sale 69, lot 915

This specimen was lot 915 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$332 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Zeeland, Provinz. Doppeltaler zu 10 Escalin (60 Sous) 1687. Sehr schön. Kleiner Randfehler. Leichte Prägeschwäche. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, double thaler of ten escalins/schillings or sixty stuivers of 1687. Very fine, Minor edge flaw, Slightly weakly struck.)"

This coin was tariffed at 60 stuivers and was struck 1685-93. It is not a double lion daalder, which was worth 48 stuivers. This obscure denomination was not struck in all the provinces. In addition to Zeeland, we find it listed for Nijmegen, Holland (Dav-4830) and Deventer (Dav-4978). Other provinces issued three gulden (such as Dav-4963) of nearly identical weight.

Recorded mintage: 495,837.

Specification: 31.76 g, 0.906 fine silver, this specimen 31.57 g.

Catalog reference: KM 63, Delmonte 1074. Dav-4973.
