Westfriesland 1698 3 gulden Dav-4963

Sincona sale 26, lot 3529

This specimen was lot 3529 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"3 Gulden 1698. Vorzüglich-FDC. Leichte Prägeschwächen. (Netherlands, province of Westfriesland, three gulden of 1698, extremely fine to uncirculated, lightly cleaned.)"

The silver three gulden was introduced in Westfriesland in 1682 with a face value of sixty stuivers, the same as the ducaton (Dav-4941), tho the three gulden contained 5% less silver. This subtype is noted for 1695-1700 but three gulden were struck well into the eighteenth century (see Dav-1853).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 31.82 g, .920 fine silver, .941 troy oz ASW, this specimen 31.63 g.
