Westfriesland 1694 2 silver ducats Dav-4907
This specimen was lot 34087 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: West Friesland. Provincial silver Double Ducat 1694 MS63 NGC. The sheer visual appeal of the offering at hand propels it into an elite tier even within the Piefort series of Dutch coinage. Hardly a trace of weakness is detected through the raised features, revealing semi-medallic appearances through and through. Dressed in ample flash indicative of the assigned, advanced designation and will doubtlessly be met with bidder enthusiasm. From the Coenen Collection." Altho the SCWC lists this as a pattern, double ducats are attested for several dates and provinces. They were struck for presentation. The regular silver ducat of this style was struck 1693-95 and is fairly common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 56.5 g, 0.873 fine silver, this specimen 57.55 g.
