Westfriesland 1682 3 gulden Dav-A4961
This specimen was lot 34085 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: West Friesland. Provincial Piefort 3 Gulden 1682 MS62 NGC. Yet another minimally available type is this substantial Piefort striking, easily discernible when felt in hand. On the cusp of a Choice Mint State designation and aptly so, mint flash broadcasting across the semi-medallic motifs. A most appreciable representative of this seldom-seen type and the sole occupant at NGC. From the Coenen Collection." It is tempting to catalog this as a six gulden but it is a piedfort three gulden, a very rare issue and the first we have posted to this site. The regular three gulden of this type (KM 84) was struck 1682 and 1687 only and is not common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 63.64 g, 0.920 fine silver; this specimen is 62.33 g.
