Westfriesland 1679 ducaton Dav-4940
This specimen was lot 2541 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$823 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, WEST-FRIESLAND, AR dukaton (zilveren rijder), 1679. Vz/ Ridder te paard n.r. boven gekroond provinciewapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. Zeldzaam. Mooie patina. Vlek op kz. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Westfriesland, silver ducaton of 1679. Obverse: mounted knight charges right over the provincial arms; reverse: arms of the Generality supported by two lions. Rare, nice patina, stain on reverse, very fine.)"
This particular style was struck 1674-79, 1692 and 1704. Westfriesland struck ducatons until 1792. Double ducatons exist.
