Wurttemberg 1824 3 kreuzer KM-540
This specimen was lot 3601 in Künker sale 440 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €240 (about US$330 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH Wilhelm I., 1816-1864. 3 Kreuzer 1824. Großer Kopf. Ohne Stempelschneidersignatur unter dem Kopf. Fast Stempelglanz. Privat erworben. (kingdom of Württemberg, William I, 1816-64, three kreuzer of 1824, large head, without engraver's signature.)"
King William began his reign as a liberal, granting Württemberg a constitution and reforming taxes, customs duties and agriculture, but grew reactionary after the revolutions of 1848. The convention thaler, last struck in 1818, was 120 kreuzer or two gulden. We believe the kronenthaler, which was struck 1818-37, was made equal to 144 kreuzer. This type, struck 1823-24, comes with (KM 541) or without the engraver's initial "W" (KM 540).
Recorded mintage: 818,486.
Specification: 0.80 g, 0.147 fine silver, 15.2 mm diameter, this specimen 1,40 g.
