Künker Auction 440, lot 3598

This specimen was lot 3598 in Künker sale 440 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €80 (about US$110 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH Wilhelm I., 1816-1864. 6 Kreuzer 1823. Schmaler Kopf. Mit KOENIG auf der Vorderseite. Min. Randfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben im Juni 1992 aus dem Lager der Münzhandlung Sonntag, Stuttgart. (kingdom of Württemberg, William I, 1816-64, six kreuzer of 1823, narrow head, with "KOENIG" on the obverse. Minor edge defect, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

King William began his reign as a liberal, granting Württemberg a constitution and reforming taxes, customs duties and agriculture, but grew reactionary after the revolutions of 1848. The convention thaler, last struck in 1818, was 120 kreuzer. The SCWC lists three varieties for 1823: KM 542 (large head), KM 543 (shown here) and KM 544 ("KÖN" instead of "KOENIG").

Recorded mintage: 449,350 (all varieties).

Specification: 2.34 g, 0.333 fine silver, this specimen 2,24 g.

Catalog reference: KM 543, AKS 96; J. 43 a; Klein/Raff 79.1 a.
