Ukraine 1998 10 hryven KM-53
This specimen was lot 3083 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 10 hryven, 1998, Princes of Ukraine Series - Prince Kyi, struck at Ukrainian mint, Kyiv with COA of issue, Proof." This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 1998, including KM 44, KM 45, KM 50, KM 52, KM 53 (shown here), KM 64, KM 67, KM 70, all struck to the same module. Wikipedia comments, "Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv were the three legendary brothers—often mentioned along with their sister Lybеd' —who, according to the Primary Chronicle, founded the city of Kiev (modern Kyiv), which eventually became the capital of Kievan Rus', and is the present-day capital of Ukraine." The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven.
