Ukraine 1998 2 hryvni KM-48
This specimen was lot 3355 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, 2 hryvni, 1998, European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, in original card of issue, cameo prooflike, mintage of only 10,000 pieces, Choice Unc, S." The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the hyperinflated Karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovanets). Its sign is "₴". This denomination was also used for KM 42 (80th Anniversary of the Battle of Kruty), KM 43 (Volodymyr Sosyura), KM 47 (Declaration of Independence), KM 49 (Ascania Nova) and KM 51 (Kyiv Polytechnical Institute). Numista warns, "This coin is the most expensive Ukrainian coin made from non precious metal...There are many counterfeits of this coin."
