Ukraine 1999 10 hryven KM-90
This specimen was lot 3094 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 10 hryven, 1999, Flora and Fauna of Ukraine Series - Steppe or Tawny Eagle, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, Proof. The tawny eagle (Aquila rapax) is a large bird of prey. Like all eagles, it belongs to the family Accipitridae. Its heavily feathered legs mark it as a member of the subfamily Aquilinae, also known as booted eagles." We don't know why the mint chose to feature this bird, which ranges Africa, Arabia and India but not the Ukraine. The closely related steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis) would seem more appropriate. This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 1999, including KM 77, KM 85, KM 86, KM 87, KM 88, KM 89, KM 90 (shown here), KM 116, KM 117 and KM 118, all struck to the same module. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven.
