This specimen was lot 31767 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 'Deluxe' 500 Kurush 1962 MS66 NGC. Monnaie de Luxe issue that features the head of Atakurk within a circle of stars and wreath, with exceptional prooflike surfaces and near-flawless fields. The central images are expertly detailed and both sides display stylistic imagery. A veritable Gem and rarely encountered as such." This monnaie de luze is wider and thinner than the conventional 500 kurush (Fr-203) and more explicitly intended for use in jewelry, where many specimens are found. Introduced in 1942, along with gold 25, 50, 100 and 250 kurush, it is still in production in small numbers.
