SB924-76774r.jpg

This specimen was lot 76774 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. 500 Kurush, 1961. Istanbul Mint. NGC MS-63. "Monnaie de Luxe" type. A pleasing Mint State example of the popular Monnie de Luxe type, delivering bold luster, with only the lightest touches of handling. A pleasing example of the type that usually displays some form of damage, a fault thankfully not attributable to this specimen." This type is listed in the SCWC for 1942-2010 while Numista lists dates as recent as 2013. The monnaie de luxe was intended for use in jewelry so it is no surprise that most have been holed or mounted.

Recorded mintage: 619.

Specification: 35.08 g, 0.917 fine gold, 35 mm diameter, 1.034 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-208 (formerly Fr-94); KM-874.
