This specimen was lot 72315 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Real, 1850-S RD. Seville Mint. Isabel II. NGC MS-64. "De Vellon" coinage. Incredibly vibrant and alluring, this attractive near-Gem presents a high degree of brilliant luster radiating throughout." This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1850-52. It is among the last of the "de vellon" coinage where twenty reales = one peso of 27.07 grams. In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. This date comes with flat forehead (shown here) and rounded forehead on the queen's bust.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, .039 troy oz ASW (not 3.38 g as stated in the SCWC), 14.2-14.6 mm diameter.
