Aureo sale 233, lot 560

This specimen was lot 560 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 3,500 euros (about US$5,827 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1843. Barcelona. CC. 80 reales. Levísimos golpecitos. Muy bella. Brillo original. Muy rara y más así. EBC-/EBC. (Eighty reales of 1843, Barcelona mint, light marks, handsome, original luster, very rare, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck at Barcelona (shown here), Madrid and Seville 1837-49 in sufficient numbers that it is one of the more common Spanish gold coins of the period. This particular issue, however, is a key date. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-17326, KM 578.1, Cal. 61.
