Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 424

This specimen was lot 424 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,900 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1843. Isabel II. Madrid. DG (Departamento de Grabado). 2 reales. Prueba no adoptada. Bellísima. Brillo original. Preciosa pátina. Única conocida. S/C. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, two reales of 1843, unadopted pattern, Madrid mint. Exquisite, original luster, beautiful toning, only one known.)"

Altho the obverse of this pattern closely resembles the regular issue (Cayón-16888), the reverse features the pillars of Hercules, a heraldic device not used on the circulating type. This auction also featured the matching half and one real patterns.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare, perhaps unique.
