Aureo sale 261, lot 627

This specimen was lot 627 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €160 (about US$257 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1844. Isabel II. J (Jubia). 2 maravedís. Marca de ceca JA. Rara. MBC+. (Isabel II, 1833-68, two maravedis of 1844, Jubia mint, 'Ja' mintmark, rare, very fine or better.)"

This type was struck in Jubia for Spain 1838, 1840-44, 1848-49 and was accompanied by copper one, four and eight maravedis. The type is not rare but scarce in nice condition. The middle dates (1840-44) are scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: copper, 3.02 g, 18.5-19.5 mm diameter.
