Spain 1844-M CL 80 reales
This specimen was lot 665 in Aureo sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €370 (about US$594 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1844. Isabel II. Madrid. CL. 80 reales. Leves marquitas. Bella. Brillo original. Rara así. EBC/EBC+. (Isabel II, 1833-68, eighty reales of 1844, Madrid mint. Light marks, handsome, lustrous, extremely fine or better, rare thus.)"
This type was struck at Barcelona, Madrid (shown here) and Seville 1837-49 in sufficient numbers that it is one of the more common Spanish gold coins of the period. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time.
Recorded mintage: 33,864, a better date.
