Aureo sale 261, lot 664

This specimen was lot 664 in Aureo sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €390 (about US$626 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1841. Isabel II. Madrid. CL. 80 reales. Escasa. MBC/MBC+. (Isabel II, 1833-68, eighty reales of 1841, Madrid mint, scarce, very fine or better.)"

This type was struck at Barcelona, Madrid (shown here) and Seville 1837-49 in sufficient numbers that it is one of the more common Spanish gold coins of the period. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time.

Recorded mintage: 11,594, a better date.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
