Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 434

This specimen was lot 434 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €510 (about US$673 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1840. Isabel II. Barcelona. PS. 80 reales. Muy bella. Pleno brillo original. Escasa así. S/C-. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, eighty reales of 1840, Barcelona mint. Very handsome, plenty of original luster, scarce thus, about uncirculated.)"

The type was issued from Barcelona, Seville and Madrid 1837-49. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time. Varieties exist in the position of "CONST"; on this one, the "T" is under Isabel's bust.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6,74 g.
